Introduction to the Course: This morning, Mr. Vinod gave us a lecture about the introduction of this course which is photography. Firstly, we introduced ourselves to one another before we start our lecture. Mr. Vinod briefed us about the exercises, project and also portfolio (hard copy and ePortfolio) that need to be done on time. He also told us about the two important objectives and the five learning outcomes of the Introduction to Photography.
OBJECTIVES:
- To learn to take pictures using the manual mode of their camera
- To be able to achieve good composition and exposure
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- Use exposure settings (Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO)
- Use the Zone System exposure technique to achieve desired results
- Distinguish a bad exposure from a good exposure
- Apply the Rule of Two-Third for composition
- Use Adobe Photoshop to edit pictures at a basic level
Then, Mr. Vinod explained about how learning outcomes can relate with the eight Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities (TGC) (discipline specific knowledge, lifelong learning, thinking and problem solving skills, communication skills, interpersonal skills, interpersonal skills, citizen and global perspectives and digital literacy) and he also introduced us to his blog, www.yourbrief.wordpress.com and our very own Facebook group, intro2photography (foundation). After that, he mentioned about the materials that the students need to have during the 18 weeks course (a camera, a tripod, a laptop and a clear file) and he showed us some of his brilliant previous works and also introduced himself briefly.
Exercise 1: Presentation of 10 of Your Best-Liked Pictures: After a long lecture of the introduction of this course, Mr. Vinod gave us an exercise 1, Presentation of 10 of Your Best Liked Pictures. For the presentation, we have to make it in a video form. The presentation must include five pictures of our own and five pictures of five different photographers. Here is the link for the video.
My Pictures
This picture was
taken in Perth, Australia. The branches fascinate me. The skies look clear and
I like it how the sun shines beautifully in between the branches. I also like
the cloudless skies shaded as it farther apart from the sun.
I took this picture
when I was in LEGOLAND, Malaysia on Christmas Eve. What I like about the
picture is the lightings and decorations on the Christmas tree and the other
trees light up the darkness. I also like how the crowds gathered around
the Christmas tree looking like a big lovely family.
This picture was
taken during the orientation party in The Grand Hall. I like this picture
because it shows how the students can be so close to each other while enjoying
the performance even though it is only the first week of the semester.
This picture was
taken in Kem PLKN Princess Haliza, Sepang. The reason why I like this picture
is the morning skies look amazingly beautiful and I like how the blue and
pinkish orange skies combine pretty well. The skies look more appealing with
the dark looking trees underneath.
I snapped this
picture in Perlis while I was in the car. The picture shows that even though
the yellowish green paddy field looks empty but it looks very calming and
peaceful.

This picture is taken
by Coral Staley Hall. She is quite well-known on Flickr. I love the way Coral
focuses the tulips in the picture above. I even love how the sunlight makes the
tulips look more attractive.

A well-known
photographer in the world, Nigel Barker, was the photographer behind this epic
picture. Even though the picture was taken at the landfill site but it makes
the high fashion dress more appealing and that is the reason why I like this
picture.
This picture is taken by Jack Harries. He is
not a professional photographer but I like most of his pictures. The children
look very happy even though they live in poverty and the girl in the green
shirt captivated me with her gorgeous smile.

This picture is taken
by Clare Barboza. I like this picture because the food looks so tempting and the
picture shows the texture of the food. I also like how Clare put the picture of
the lambs and the potatoes together because it makes the picture looks unique.

Zain Abdullah, a
local photographer was the one who snapped this magnificent picture. What I
like about this picture is the situation looks cheerful and colourful. The
picture fascinates me as a reader to look into it.
- choose a good quality camera (e.g: mirrorless camera)
- choose a friendly-use tripod
- laptop is needed for this course
- an A4 clear file is a must have item for hard copy
Exercise 1: Presentation of 10 Best-Liked Pictures:
Feedback
general feedback: Mr. Vinod talked about the students' ePortfolios. He asked us to paste the screenshot of our hardcopy and also copy and paste the marking rubric from his own blog. Other than that, he asked us to be accurate in our writings and write the reflection section longer at least 120 words per paragraph. He even said that we only have write two paragraphs for the lecture section.
- make a 7-minute audio video for the presentation
- include five of personal pictures and five pictures of five different photographers
- explain why do you like those pictures
- copy and paste the link to the Facebook group, intro2photography
Marking Rubric
Exercise 1: Presentation of 10 of your best-liked pictures (5%)
- Content (3%): The presentation must showcase a variety of pictures: personal(5 self shot), landscape, portrait, still life, etc. AND from 5 different photographers. All pictures must be credited and explained.
- Clarity of voice (2%): The student must be clear and concise in their delivery and explanation of their pictures. Evidence of understanding can be deduced by their analysis and evaluation, and in the confidence of their delivery.

specific feedback: Mr. Vinod said my exercise is a good work and I have a nice theme for my blog. He also mentioned about the reflection section where I have to divide it into three (experience, observation and findings) and he asked me to follow the general comments and explanations with regard to the reflections mentioned in the beginning of the class.
Reflection
Experience: It was our first class on this course and we required to grab a chair and sit. We have to briefly introduce ourselves. After that, Mr. Vinod explained everything about what this course is all about. He talked about good cameras like Fuji mirror-less camera and Taylor's Graduate Capabilities (TGC). He also mentioned about the things that we need to do and also the things we need to have such as camera, tripod stand, laptop and a clear folder. At the end of the class, he introduced himself to us and he showed some of amazing work and I was amazed.
Observation: From the lecture, I have known my classmates and also the things that I have to do such as ePortfolio, hardcopy and exercise 1. During the class session, I noted down important notes while Mr. Vinod was lecturing about the course, Introduction to Photography and exercise 1. I think he is a cool and funny person. His explanation about the course and exercise 1 is very clear for me to understand.
Findings: Mr. Vinod asked us to understand the two objectives of this course. I was unable to understand the objectives yet because it is only the first week of the semester. Maybe in the future, I will be able to understand the objectives clearly. The blog that he introduced to us is very useful for me because the posts in the blog guide me to do my ePortfolio and hardcopy. The Facebook group is useful as well because I can ask questions to Mr. Vinod and other classmates and also share opinions on our works. Mr. Vinod gave us an exercise, Presentation of 10 of Your Best-Liked Pictures. He asked us to explain why do we like the pictures that we have chose but it is quite hard for me to explain because I am bad in explaining - but it does not stop me at all to continue my work and hence, finishing it. I hope that in the next class, the students and I will be more outgoing and active learners.
