Assignment 1: Unconventional Self-Portrait
On the first class of this course, Ms. Maslisa was unable to attend because she was not around. But, she posted on our Facebook wall about our first assignment which is self portrait. She stated that we have to get started with our work and show her the progression in class on Monday (29th September). I sketched down some of my ideas and searched some cool self-portraits on the internet for inspirations. While searching for inspirations, I saw an amazing paper art that someone did and it is called quilling. So, I decided to challenge myself by using quilling method for my self-portrait. Here are some of the sketches that I did and inspirations.

Rationale:
Why did I choose quilling? As what I mentioned above, I wanted to challenge myself and also discover new things. Like what Imani said in class during her presentation, designers have to discover new stuffs to gain more experience. Moreover, I really love crafting since I was a kid. At first, I thought it was going to be easy for me to complete it by time but it was actually hard to coil one by one. You need to have the patience to coil the paper strips and it took me more than an hour to coil 20 coils of paper strips. Even though it was not easy, I had fun while doing this assignment - even Ms. Maslisa asked me to enjoy myself while doing it. The shawl part actually has two meanings. First, that is how I look like (the hijab) when I am out and about and also, it portrays my curly hair. The reason why I have the flower crown on the head is it shows that I love flowers - especially roses! And different colours of the roses represent different personality in me;
Pink (sweetness, girlish, feminine): I can be girly - sometimes!
Magenta (harmony, balance): I am emotionally stable, I can control my feelings and such
Orange (happy, positive, ambiguous): I am a cheerful person (that's what my friends always labelled me)
Red (romance, aggressive, anger, adventure, danger): I can be romantic to my family and friends and at the same time I can be pretty aggressive towards others
