Introduction to Photography
Exercise 2(b): Shutter Speed and 2(c): ISO
Lecture
Today in class, Mr. Vinod explained about the ISO first which define as a number indicating the digital camera. From my understanding, the higher the number of ISO, the higher the sensitivity of the sensor and vice versa. Higher number of ISO makes the picture more noisier while smaller number of ISO makes the picture less noisier.
After that, Mr. Vinod lectured about shutter speed. Shutter speed means the duration of time that the light stays in the sensor. From my understanding, fast shutter speed can freeze fast moving objects while slow shutter speed can capture movement of a certain subject.
As the conclusion, both shutter speed and ISO affect the exposure.
Exercise 2(b): Shutter Speed
- Using a ceiling fan, keep the fan speed at 1
- Capture images using shutter settings (1/1000 till 1/4 of second)
- Repeat this exercise after changing the fan speed to 2 and 3
- Prove that ISO affects exposure
- Prove that when the ISO is increased, the quality of the picture gets affected
Exercise 2(b): Shutter Speed
The student must capture evidence of the shutter's ability to freeze fast moving objects and blur moving objects.
Exercise 2(c): ISO
The student must capture the evidence of the evidence of degradation of the image as the ISO increases in sensitivity. The student also must produce evidence that ISO can directly affect exposure.

Feedback
general feedback: Mr. Vinod said that the hardcopy must be in black and white format. All the things on our ePortfolios are fine it is just that we have to be like scientist - observe things more detail and specific. He asked us to ponder more important questions regard to the topic. Then, answer the questions by ourselves. He also asked us to download the new version of adobe photoshop.
specific feedback: Mr. Vinod messaged me on Facebook that the exercise for the ISO seemed accurate but it would have been better if I completed the work on my own. The shutter speed was not legible and he could not make out the results and asked to me to refer my classmate's document for reference. Mr. Vinod also said that my reflection section must reflect on two areas; one, is the in-class activities; two, the results of my exercise.
Reflection
experience: This morning, we had two discussions. Firstly, we discussed about ISO. Mr. Vinod picked me and two other classmates to start the discussion. We asked several questions and others answered. The same thing happened during the discussion about shutter speed. After the discussion about ISO, we were asked to form groups and prove the two questions given ("does ISO affects the exposure?" and "what happens when the ISO increase?"). We went outside of the class to take pictures as our evidence. Then, we were asked to do a task for shutter speed at home using a ceiling fan.
observation: From what I observe, now, I am able to use shutter speed and ISO better. I get to know about the usage of ISO a lot better when we were asked to do our tasks in groups. Furthermore, I get a chance to get close with my fellow group mates more. Not just that, I also gained experience on using the ISO and shutter speed mode when I was doing the Exercise 2(b) at home.
findings: I think that I had fun in the class during the discussions yet I gained more knowledge about the manual mode of my DSLR. Thank you, sir! I am truly sorry for the illegible document, sir. I will try my best to solve my problem.
